From what I've read, the experiences of contacting our relatives in Ukraine are often very similar. They tell me everything is fine in Ukraine other than terrorists in the East. They think Russia is in a poorer and worse state. If I tell them that Ukraine is going to shit fast, particularly economically, and that they should emigrate to Russia, they tell me, «fuck that, we'll move to Europe somewhere». They believe that the West is going to make Ukraine rich and prosperous. This is why some of my relatives, even if they are Russian, don't support Russia or the rebels. Even then, though, these relatives also tell me they don't want Ukraine to join NATO, either. I'm not sure they really understand what is happening in their country.
It's a different story amongst Ukrainian expats, though. I met a few at a party from Zaporozhiye who were pretty pro-Russian, as well as my parents and grandparents who no longer live in Ukraine. It's like it's the ones still in Ukraine who have been nurtured to blame Russia for Ukraine's problems over the last 23 years.
In 1991, my parents were similar, though. They voted for Ukrainian independence from the USSR, because they believed that Ukraine would become rich and prosperous. Reality was the opposite. Ukraine was raped and plundered.
